Parents save futsal club: "We made history, no Benjamim team ever got there"

Without associative experience, but with the desire, around 30 parents decided to overcome the main obstacle, which was being able to pay the charges that threatened the club. Those who were grateful were the athletes from the 4 training levels who maintained what is seen as a second home.

In Barcouço, in Mealhada, a group of parents of athletes from a futsal club decided that they were not going to leave their children without playing sport. They rolled up their sleeves, raised funds and took charge of the institution that was in danger of ending.

Tânia Ferreira and Ana Santos are just two of the faces that changed a club dedicated to futsal. With thousands of euros in debt, and despite the efforts of the former president who emigrated, the end of Futebol Clube de Barcouço, in Mealhada, seemed inevitable.

But about a year and a half ago, the parents of the children in the training decided that they would be the ones to keep the ball rolling and one of the mothers even became president.

Without associative experience, but with the desire, around three dozen parents decided to overcome the main obstacle, which was being able to pay the charges that threatened the club. Those who were grateful were the approximately 30 athletes from the 4 training levels who maintained what is seen as a second home.

An example of associations that even convinced players and coaches of the senior team, which competes in the main futsal division of the Aveiro district, to stay.

Because the celebration of victories was already on its way to other fields, when the parents entered the pavilion.

The club’s lights didn’t go out, but volunteering didn’t come to an end, because even with some sponsorship and support from the local authority, the bills have to be paid.

The bar, open on training days and many weekends, is one of the sources of income. And it is also maintained by the parents of young athletes.

In a club where parents didn’t just watch from the sidelines of the field, now the dream is to have transport for the children, especially because they are the ones who take them to the games.

And always maintaining hope, of repeating achievements that transcend generations.
