The debut of Gabriel Bortoleto no São Paulo Formula 1 GP ended earlier than expected. Right on the first lap in Interlagosthe Brazilian pilot of Sauber got involved in a touch with Lance Strollyes Aston Martinand ended up out of the race. The incident led to the entry of safety car for the removal of the damaged car.

Before leaving the cockpit, Bortoleto expressed irritation with the Canadian’s maneuver, criticizing his attitude in the curve:

The accident capped a turbulent weekend for the Sauber rookie. On Saturday, during sprint raceBortoleto had suffered a strong accident at 339 km/hwhich caused extensive damage to the car. The severity of the impact was such that he was unable to participate in the official classificationand the team had to request a special authorization from the FIA so that the driver could line up on the grid on Sunday.

With the abandonment, Bortoleto also increased a negative statistic among Brazilians who debuted at home: 28 national pilots who competed for the first time in the Brazilian GP, 19 did not complete the race. The only one to score points — and still win — was Emerson Fittipaldiem 1973when he triumphed in front of the fans at Interlagos.
