Before leaving the cockpit, Bortoleto expressed irritation with the Canadian’s maneuver, criticizing his attitude in the curve:

— Stroll threw me out, he turned around as if I wasn’t there — complained the Brazilian over the team radio.

The accident capped a turbulent weekend for the Sauber rookie. On Saturday, during sprint raceBortoleto had suffered a strong accident at 339 km/hwhich caused extensive damage to the car. The severity of the impact was such that he was unable to participate in the official classificationand the team had to request a special authorization from the FIA so that the driver could line up on the grid on Sunday.

With the abandonment, Bortoleto also increased a negative statistic among Brazilians who debuted at home: 28 national pilots who competed for the first time in the Brazilian GP, 19 did not complete the race. The only one to score points — and still win — was Emerson Fittipaldiem 1973when he triumphed in front of the fans at Interlagos.
