The UK is providing Belgium with equipment and experts to combat the drone threat, which has led to airspace disruptions and airport closures.

The United Kingdom will send experts and equipment to Belgium to help Brussels fight drones that have repeatedly violated its airspace and forced authorities there to temporarily close airports in the Belgian capital and the city of Liège. TASR took over the report from the Reuters agency.

The head of the British armed forces, Richard Knighton, told BBC television that his Belgian counterpart had requested help and that equipment and personnel were on their way.

Help to Belgium

“The defense minister and I agreed at the end of last week to send our people and our equipment to Belgium to help them,” he said, without giving details of what equipment or how many personnel London would provide to Belgium.

“We don’t know – and the Belgians don’t know yet – the source of these drones, but we will help them by providing our equipment and capabilities that we have already started deploying to help Belgium,” Knighton confirmed to the BBC, writes the AP agency.

The threat of hybrid warfare

In Belgium in the past period, they recorded several cases in which unknown drones violated the airspace near airports and military facilities. Similar incidents were also reported from Germany, Sweden or Norway. Some European officials say this is part of a hybrid war being waged by Russia against Europe. It denies any connection with drones.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested on Friday that there may be a link between the drone incidents in Belgium and the European Commission’s intention to use frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.
