What is fog and how is it created?
Fog is nothing more than a type of low cloud, i.e. a collection of very small water droplets suspended in the air just above the earth’s surface. Fog is formed when the air at the earth’s surface is very humid and cools down to the so-called dew point, i.e. the temperature at which water vapor begins to condense. Then, tiny water droplets condense on dust, dust or salt particles floating in the air, creating a cloud-like suspension. This most often happens at night or at dawn, when the earth gives off heat after the whole day and quickly cools down, and the air above it becomes colder. Fog forms especially easily in windless weather, in valleys, over lakes or rivers, where humidity is the highest and temperature is lowest.
Why can fog be dangerous?
- Limited visibility – In dense fog, visibility may drop even below several dozen meters.
- Traffic disruptions and accidents – Fog is a common factor in accidents due to the sudden reduction in visibility and lack of time to react.
- Health concerns – Fog water itself is not toxic, but in urban or industrial settings, fog can trap air pollutants.
