Petrobras’ first exploratory well in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, on the Equatorial Margin, will be the fifth deepest that the state-owned company has ever drilled in its entire history. The planned length of 7,081 meters corresponds to 23 stacked Eiffel Towers, the symbol of Paris.

Drilling of the well, called Morpho, began on October 20, the same day that Ibama granted the license to the company.

  5. Morpho Well, in block FZA-M-59, in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, at a predicted depth of 7,081m.

The expectation is that drilling the well in the Foz do Amazonas Basin will take around five months to complete. In addition to this main well, the company plans to drill three other auxiliary wells, the progress of which will depend on the results obtained during drilling.

In total, Petrobras plans to drill eight wells in the Foz do Amazonas Basin in the coming years, as part of the Equatorial Margin exploration program — which extends from the coast of Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte.

Five years ago, Petrobras sought an exploration license for the region, under criticism from environmentalists, who fear harm to the fauna and flora of the Foz do Amazonas Basin. The operating license was granted by Ibama on the eve of COP30, a United Nations event that discusses the end of the use of fossil fuels.

In addition to the Foz do Amazonas Basin, the company also carries out exploratory activities in another basin that forms the Equatorial Margin: the Potiguar basin, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. There, Petrobras has already drilled two wells, but without proving reserves. The company intends to start drilling a third well in the region in the coming months.
