The governor of Rio de Janeiro, (), is preparing to announce a state operation to remove barricades placed by drug traffickers in favelas,
The measure should be launched next Thursday (13) at a meeting between Castro and mayors of the three areas most affected by the problem: Baixada Fluminense, the capital and the eastern region of the state (São Gonçalo, Itaboraí and neighboring cities).
The action takes place in the wake of , on October 28, and received widespread popular approval.
Castro has been investing in public security discourse since the police action and has once again
The inspiration for the program to combat barricades came from a measure adopted by the city council of Belford Roxo, in Baixada Fluminense.
spoke last week with Castro about the topic. The name “Operação Barricada Zero”, from local management, could even be adopted at the state level.
Barricades are generally made by organized crime with burned cars, stones, barrels, trash and even train tracks.
The action to remove them involves four departments, which have the necessary equipment to remove the obstructions: Environment, Infrastructure, Cities and Agriculture. Police forces will provide coverage for these removals.
Holes that criminals also open will then be covered with concrete and asphalt.
According to state management, the removal of the barricades is like a first warning of crime. If they are relocated, there will be more overt operations involving the state’s elite forces such as BOPE, from the Military Police, and Core, from the Civil Police.
The objective, says one of Castro’s interlocutors, is to free the population from the “empire of fear” that currently prevails in these communities. The assessment is that the operation two weeks ago put the factions on the defensive after a long time.
