The municipal secretary of Social Assistance and Human Rights (SASDH), João Marcos Luz, stated, during an interview with the press at the public hearing this Monday morning (10), at the Rio Branco Chamber, that the removal of families from the area known as Papoco, in Rio Branco, is not only a social action, but also a measure to tackle crime problems in the city center.

The statement was made during a press interview, amid discussions about the transfer of residents to the Rosa Linda complex. According to the secretary, the majority of families agree with the change.
“According to our report, 95% of the people interviewed said they want to leave. We are talking about an area in disrepair, with no infrastructure conditions, with open sewage and where there is exploitation of children, elderly people and crime,” he explained.
Luz stated that the City Hall, through the Mil e Uma Dignidade project, intends to offer safe housing with adequate structure for those who currently live in precarious situations. “Only a minority resists leaving, but we will continue talking. It is not possible to defend that people remain in a place completely condemned by the Civil Defense”, he highlighted.
The secretary also refuted the arguments of residents who say they fear the change because of Rosa Linda’s proximity to Cidade do Povo, a region where there is a presence of rival criminal factions.
“This issue is one of public safety, and anyone who says they are a faction should be arrested. What we want is to bring dignity. Furthermore, this action will help solve a historic crime problem in the city center,” he stated.
Luz also demanded firmer action from the police in the central region of Rio Branco, citing points where there is a concentration of criminals. “There are places where 15 scoundrels are left standing without being bothered. This is a matter for the police, not social assistance. Human rights are for upright people”, he declared.
