In the last three days, 1,772 migrants have arrived in the UK. Minister Shabana Mahmood is preparing fundamental changes, inspired by the strict Danish immigration policy.
503 migrants on seven boats crossed the English Channel to the UK on Saturday as the British government considers major changes to the country’s immigration rules. TASR informs about this according to Monday’s report of the DPA agency.
In the past three days, 1,772 migrants have arrived in Britain, while so far this year there have been 38,726 people. In the same period last year, there were 32,119 migrants, and in 2023, 26,699 people. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce a fundamental change in British immigration rules in the coming days, which will be based on the Danish system, writes DPA. The minister therefore sent several British representatives to Denmark last month to study the system there. Denmark’s border control and asylum policy are considered to be among the strictest in Europe.
According to the DPA, Britain is particularly interested in tightening the rules in the area of family reunification and limiting temporary residence in the case of some refugees. Mahmood expressed her interest in introducing disincentives to stop people entering the UK through unauthorized routes, while making it easier to deport those who do not have the right to stay. Sources say that he also wants to meet with the Danish Minister for Migration and Integration Rasmus Stoklund as soon as possible.
