Paris continues to be the most popular destination for Portuguese people for winter getaways, but there is a new country emerging in the preferences of those who want something different. Located in the Middle East, Oman is attracting more and more travelers for its authenticity, safety and natural beauty.
According to Meteored, a website specializing in meteorology, around 67% of Portuguese people plan to travel between December 2025 and January 2026. The majority opt for short trips, lasting three to five days, and the car remains the most used means of transport, followed by the plane.
The major European capitals remain at the top of the choices. According to the same source, Paris remains the most reserved destination, ahead of cities like London or Rome. However, interest in destinations outside Europe has been growing.
A Gulf country gaining ground in Portuguese preferences
Still according to the same source, 70% of Portuguese people plan to travel within the European continent during the winter, but around 22% are already considering intercontinental destinations. Among the new options, Oman has been standing out in research and in the programs of Portuguese travel agencies.
With landscapes that vary between deserts, beaches and mountains, Oman offers a distinct image from that of its Gulf neighbors. The country is described as “a hidden treasure of the Middle East”, standing out for the way it combines nature, culture and tranquility.
In the capital, Muscat, the mosques reflect the sun over the Arabian Sea and the movement in the streets mixes tradition and modernity. Further south, Salalah has a tropical climate and extensive incense plantations. The Jabal Akhdar region, known as Green Mountain, is sought after for its expansive views and hotels integrated into the rocky landscape.
A destination with a shared history with Portugal
Among the factors that bring Oman closer to Portuguese travelers is the historical connection between the two countries.
For more than a century, the Portuguese empire maintained a presence in several areas of the Omani coast. Fortresses and walls still visible in Muscat and Sohar recall this period and help create a sense of familiarity for those visiting the country.
Mild climate, hospitality and security
Oman is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East and is recognized for the hospitality of its people. The absence of crowds and the peaceful environment are often cited as advantages over other destinations in the region.
Between November and February, average temperatures are around 25 degrees, making the country a popular alternative for those looking to escape the European cold.
Tour operator Solférias has already included Oman in its offers, with week-long programs that combine beach, culture and nature, operated by Qatar Airways. Prices are close to 1,100 euros per person.
As mentioned by , the Portuguese who choose Oman already know the classic destinations of Europe and are looking for more authentic experiences. The country presents a combination of diverse landscapes, stability and historical heritage, characteristics that place it among the international destinations with the greatest potential for growth in the Portuguese market.
