Oldest in the country, “Diario de Pernambuco” celebrates 200 years

Newspaper was considered material cultural heritage of Brazil in law sanctioned in 2024

The oldest newspaper in circulation in the country, , based in Recife, celebrated its 200th anniversary on Friday (7.Nov.2025). According to the website, an event on November 3rd brought together authorities and artists who are part of the periodical’s trajectory. Among them, the governor of Pernambuco, (PSD), and the mayor of Recife, (PSB).

“The newspaper ‘Diario de Pernambuco’ is born every dawn, but it carries within it 2 centuries of memory, commitment and affection for this State, for Brazil and for the world, which accompany its trajectory as the oldest newspaper in circulation in the Southern Hemisphere and in Portuguese language on the planet”said the owner and president of the publication, Carlos Frederico Vital. The lawyer has been in charge of the Pernambuco newspaper since 2019.

The newspaper celebrated its 200th anniversary with an event at the Santa Isabel Theater. Raquel Lyra who Pernambuco Diary has been, throughout its history, “an interlocutor of history” of the State, “actively participating in the construction of democracy”. João Campos spoke about “historic landmark”. He stated: “It is essential that we celebrate a vehicle that turns 200 years old, a superlative of our state, which personifies history, memory and the strength of the press”. They received a medal commemorating the newspaper’s 200th anniversary.

In November 2024, the newspaper had its journalistic collection recognized as Brazilian by law.

Founded in 1825 by the Pernambuco typographer and journalist Antonino José de Miranda Falcão, the Pernambuco Diary It is the oldest newspaper in circulation in the Southern Hemisphere and the oldest in the world in Portuguese.

The periodical has reported important facts for almost 200 years, in particular, portraying the political, social and cultural history of the State of Pernambuco and Brazil.

In 2016, the Saturday and Sunday editions of the newspaper were unified and transformed into a super printed edition published on Saturdays, like other newspapers. Thus, the Sunday edition began to be offered online to subscribers of the print and digital versions.

These measures were due to financial problems and hundreds of labor actions against the newspaper. In , of the 45 professionals who were part of the publication’s editorial staff, only 4 were CLT holders. The newspaper also had its accounts blocked and the courts seized cars used to transport journalists to assignments.

In 2019, Grupo R2 sold the newspaper, along with the radio stations Club FM e Radio Clubfor lawyer and businessman Carlos Frederico Vital, advisor to the Sport Club do Recife and legal vice-president of the Associação dos Cronistas Desportivos de Pernambuco, as well as owner of other ventures.
