Portuguese women have a revolution in the rural sector on their hands

Portuguese women are boosting Portugal’s rural sector. More than a third of the country’s agricultural holdings are managed by women, a figure that stands out compared to the European average.

In Portugal, the women play a fundamental role in the sustainability and future of rural areas, particularly in agriculture.

Currently, according to Corteva (a technology company applied to seeds), in a submission to ZAP, 33.3% of Portuguese agricultural holdings are managed by women, placing the country above the European average (30.1%).

This value reflects its growing prominence in agriculture and its commitment to innovation, sustainability and life in rural communities.

With the aim of further promoting its leadership, Corteva Agriscience and the Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CAP) launch the 6th edition of the TalentA Program, an initiative that recognizes and supports innovative projects by rural women in the agri-food sector.

The program offers a €5,000 prizespecialized training and a visibility campaign for the winner. Applications are open from November 6, 2025 to January 15, 2026 at .

Furthermore, the three finalist projects will have access to training and professional support, as well as a promotion and visibility campaign for their projects.

Promote equality in rural areas

Almost 50% of Portugal’s rural population is female, many of whom are directly involved in agricultural work or agri-food activities. However, they continue to face structural barriers related to access to finance, visibility and recognition.

Since its creation in 2019, the TalentA Program has trained more than 1,500 womenpromoting sustainable development and digitalization in rural areas. In Portugal, the program highlighted exemplary projects led by women that combine tradition, sustainability and innovation.
