WARNING! Ryanair is changing the rules for passengers: Tickets will work differently! You have to pay tens of euros extra

From Wednesday, Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will require passengers to exclusively use digital boarding passes generated on its mobile app. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

  • Ryanair is introducing exclusively digital boarding passes from Wednesday.
  • Boarding tickets will be presented via the company’s mobile application.
  • The change is part of a strategy to reduce paper waste.
  • Paper tickets will be available in the event of equipment loss or malfunction.
  • Insufficient online check-in at the airport will be charged from 30 to 55 euros.

Ryanair states that passengers will have to show their boarding passes through their mobile application on a smartphone or tablet during the security check and when entering the plane.

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said in an interview with the British newspaper The Independent that he expects problems at the beginning of the abolition of paper boarding passes, although currently already more than 80 percent of passengers use their application.

The low-cost carrier says this is part of its digital strategy and aims to simplify check-in with as little impact on the environment as possible.. Switching to digital boarding passes can save more than 300 tonnes of paper per year, according to Ryanair.

If the smartphone battery is lost or discharged, passengers will be able to obtain a paper boarding pass free of charge at the airport before the security check. If the passenger does not have access to the electronic boarding pass after passing the security check, the airport staff will help the passenger based on the personal information in the systems.

Those who forget to check-in online well in advance will be able to get their boarding passes at the airport for a fee ranging from 30 euros in Spain to 40 euros in Austria or 55 euros elsewhere in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Passengers who do not own a smartphone or other smart device can obtain a paper boarding pass at the airport. However, the condition is to check-in well in advance.
