Tornado in PR: “Reconstruction response has to be quick”, says minister

The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góesstated that the federal government is working to ensure that the reconstruction response is “at the speed that the population needs and deserves”, after the tornadoes that hit Paraná over the weekend.

According to Góes, teams from the federal, state and municipal government are already working in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, the most affected city, where around 90% of properties were destroyed by winds that reached 330 km/h. He visited the municipality on Sunday (9) and highlighted that it started over the weekend.

“Just yesterday the first plan for the reconstruction of the school and the multi-sports gym came into effect. Today we have already approved and committed R$15 million specifically for this plan”, stated the minister in an interview with CNN Brazil.

According to Góes, resources are being released immediately, as plans are presented. “I advised in the meeting with the state and the municipality that they should not wait to finish the entire survey before requesting resources. In terms of humanitarian aid, they received it; we are already doing it”, he said.

The government of Paraná reported that it has started planning to rebuild 320 houses in , one of the most devastated cities. According to Simepar, the state was hit by three tornadoes — in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, Guarapuava and Turvo — caused by extreme weather conditions, including intense heat and sudden changes in winds.

The reconstruction actions are supported by the ministries of Integration and Regional Development, Health, Communications, Education and Mines and Energy, in addition to National Civil Defense. The federal government maintains technicians in the municipality to coordinate the reconstruction of housing, health units, schools and public buildings.
