Ukrainian cities in the east are fighting for survival: Supply routes are threatened

The Ukrainian military command on Monday admitted problems with the supply of the city of Pokrovsk and neighboring Myrnohrad, where Ukrainian troops are trying to repel advancing Russian forces. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency. The spokesman of the General Staff, Andrij Kovaľov, did not say what exactly the mentioned supply problems mean, but he denied claims that Russian troops have full fire control over Ukrainian supply routes. New ammunition was delivered to the units in Myrnohrad on Sunday and the wounded were evacuated, he specified. According to him, Ukrainian troops continue to fight against Russian forces in Pokrovsk.

The DPA notes that after a year of intense fighting, Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad may soon come under Russian control. The territory held by Ukrainian forces there, which has shrunk to just a few square kilometers, is largely in the line of sight of Russian attack drones. On Monday, the Russian Ministry of Defense repeated its claim that the Russians had completely cut off Ukrainian supply routes in both mentioned places. At the same time, it announced the capture of three more Ukrainian villages on the front – Solodka and Nova in the Zaporozhye region and Hnativka in the Donetsk region.

Russia currently controls about 19 percent of Ukrainian territory and in recent weeks has intensified pressure on the cities of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk in eastern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Russia deployed approximately 17,000 soldiers with the aim of capturing Pokrovsk. About 60,000 people lived in this city before the war, which began with the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops in February 2022. As a transport hub, this city is important for supplying Ukrainian troops.
