Chief Raoni and ministers inaugurate COP Village in Belém

Installation to house almost 3 thousand indigenous people is located in a basic education school at the Federal University of Pará

The indigenous leader, chief Raoni Metuktire, 93 years old, and ministers from the president’s government (PT) inaugurated the COP Village on Tuesday night (11.Nov.2025). The site will house indigenous people during COP30 (30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change) in Belém.

The place has 2,803 indigenous people staying this Tuesday (Nov 11). It is located in a basic education establishment, the Escola de Aplicação da UFPA (Federal University of Pará), which occupies 14,000 m2 of land.

Raoni was in a wheelchair. He gave a speech in kayak. It was translated into Portuguese. He said he met Marechal Cândido Rondon (1865-1958) and spoke with Juscelino Kubitschek (1902-1976).

He stated that white men want to take over indigenous lands. He wished COP30 success. There are 500 indigenous people accredited for the Blue Zone, where there are debate panels and where diplomatic negotiations take place.

The ministers (Indigenous Peoples), (Environment), (Culture), (Human Rights), Márcia Lopes (Women) and Esther Dweck (Management) and the president of Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples) participated in the inauguration.
