System developed by Conmebol will be applied together with goal line technology in competition decisions in November
The (South American Football Confederation) will use the SAOT (Semi-automatic Offside System) and the GLT (Goal Line Technology) in the finals of the Sul-Americana (Atlético MG x Lanús, November 22nd) and Libertadores (Palmeiras x Flamengo, November 29th).
The announcement was made this Wednesday (November 12, 2025) by the Referee Commission and the entity’s Broadcast department. Both systems are produced entirely by the organization itself. Here is it (PDF – 1 MB).
The implementation of these technologies occurs for the 2nd consecutive year in South American competitions. Technological resources were previously applied in 4 decisive games:
- in the Sudamericana 2024 final between Racing (ARG) and Cruzeiro (BRA);
- in the Libertadores 2024 decision between Botafogo (BRA) and Atlético Mineiro (BRA); and
- in the two Recopa 2025 games – both in the first leg between Racing (ARG) and Botafogo (BRA), and in the return match between Botafogo (BRA) and Racing (ARG).
For the systems to function properly, the confederation installs 24 specialized cameras around the stadium. Of this total, 14 are destined for GLT and 10 for SAOT, as explained by representatives of the entity’s Broadcast department and Arbitrators Commission.
HOW IT WORKS
The cameras used have the technical capacity to capture more than 200 frames per second and offer resolution greater than 500 pixels per meter. This precision guarantees the reliability of decisions made with technological assistance during matches.
The system employs an automated optical tracking mechanism that monitors the exact position of each player and the ball in real time. The technology processes more than 1 million data points every second, which allows it to accurately determine offside situations and goal-line moves.
Conmebol did not disclose information about possible implementation costs or details about the next specific matches that will feature these technologies in addition to the finals already mentioned.
