The Milan Prosecutor’s Office (northern Italy) is investigating alleged trips by Italian citizens to shoot people under siege in Sarajevo between 1992 and 1996, following a recently filed complaint. No identities

The siege officially ended in February 1996, with the withdrawal of Bosnian Serb troops after the signing of the peace agreement in December 1995 that ended the war. The investigation is based on the complaint ofthe writer Ezio Gavazzeni and of the lawyers Nicola Brigida and Guido Salvini.

“The documentation includes the evidence that allowed this investigation to be opened and reveals that Italian citizens traveled to Sarajevo, passing through Trieste, to kill besieged people,” explained lawyer Brigida.

The complaint, like the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, does not raise identities but focuses on exposing those trips with documents that supposedly prove their organization, or testimonies from soldiers or intelligence services, the lawyer clarifies.

Documentary ‘Sarajevo safari’

Subasic has recalled that the existence of these trips to shoot civilians was already discussed publicly in ‘Sarajevo Safari’, a documentary by director Miran Zupancic in Slovenian released in 2022, and which offered as many questions as answers about this alleged practice.

The former military man stated that the Bosnian Justice opened a file on this issue after the complaint made by Benjamina Karic, who was mayor of Sarajevo between 2021 and 2024. Subasic maintains that some of those who participated in those alleged safaris have already died but that those who were younger “are still within the reach of justice.”

The crime considered by the Milan Prosecutor’s Office It is multiple homicide with the aggravating circumstances of ‘abject motives’ and ‘cruelty’, which means that these events cannot prescribe.

“I hope that the Milan prosecutor’s office will take this case to the end,” said the witness.
