Arrested for around eight months in Cambodia, a country on the Asian continent, Daniela Marys Costa Oliveira, 35, from Minas Gerais, was sentenced in the early hours of Wednesday (12) to 2 years and 6 months in prison for possession and use of drugs. However, there is still an appeal.

Her sister, Lorena Oliveira, told the g1 news portal that Daniela was the victim of a human trafficking scheme and that, when she refused to participate in scams, drugs were placed in her bag, resulting in her arrest in March this year.

“The UFMG Law Clinic, which supports and advises us, is already aware of the case and will prepare everything necessary, since my sister is innocent and is being wronged. We can never forget that she was the victim of a human trafficking scheme”, said Lorena.

According to her family, Daniela had left Belo Horizonte, her hometown, heading to João Pessoa, where she had lived until then. In March of this year, she reported that she decided to look for opportunities outside Brazil, and found a telemarketing vacancy in Cambodia. Upon arriving at the location, according to relatives, his passport was detained and he later discovered that the “work” involved applying online scams.

“We didn’t understand very well, she informed us that her passport had been withheld, so we started to find this very strange (…). It didn’t seem like a very legal thing to be doing, and she decided to leave. The terror began there,” Lorena said to the g1 news portal.

Still according to the family, the Brazilian decided to leave, but there was no negotiation with whoever hired her. Then, in retaliation, they allegedly planted drugs in her belongings, as Lorena reported to g1: “They didn’t accept her leaving. Then, on March 26th, when she returned to her room, the police were already there. They seized three pills that weren’t hers, they were in her things, and she was arrested.”

After the arrest, the scammers still pretended to be Daniela on WhatsApp and managed to take R$27,000 from her family.
