A tornado caused extensive damage in the municipality of Nisa, in the district of Portalegre, on Thursday afternoon. The phenomenon, described by authorities as a “strong wind event”, hit the parish of São Matias with particular intensity, leaving a trail of destruction.
According to the Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Alto Alentejo, the tornado knocked down high voltage poles and several trees, and also caused significant damage in the village of Falagueira. Housing, public buildings and electrical infrastructure were heavily affected, but, fortunately, there is no record of human casualties, confirmed the São Matias Parish Council.
There are around 20 operatives on site, supported by a dozen vehicles, carrying out cleaning work, assessing damage and restoring normality. Firefighters, members of the GNR, technicians from the Municipal Civil Protection and teams from E-Redes are also mobilized.
The bad weather also caused damage in other parts of the district, namely in the municipalities of Gavião and Elvas, where trees fell and some structures collapsed.
