- Slovakia is affected by pressure height and flow of warm air.
- Lower locations experience cloudy, foggy and drizzling weather.
- It is clear or partly clear on the mountains and in places at lower altitudes.
- In the area of the High and Belianske Tatras, the blow wind is strongly manifested.
Slovakia is affected by a weakening pressure system from the southeast, and very warm air flows in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Cloudy, foggy and relatively cold weather prevails at lower altitudes in a large area of the Slovak Republic, sometimes with drizzle. It is clear to partly clear in the mountains and rarely in lower areas. On the leeward side of the mountain range, a locally blowing wind occurs. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) informed about it on the social network.
According to meteorologists, the blowing wind is most pronounced in the area at the border of the High and Belianske Tatras. “While on the windward side (in this case southern to southeastern) on the side of the mountain range it is cloudy with a temperature only around zero, in the leeward direction (north side) it is significantly warmer at a similar altitude (even drier),” they said.
The reason is that in the lee, where the air descends to a higher air pressure, it is compressed and subsequently heated. “The air is heated according to the dry adiabatic gradient, i.e. much more significantly than on the windward side of the mountain range (in this case, however, we do not observe classic windward clouds and precipitation on the windward side of the mountain range, as is usually described in the literature),” the experts noted.
