There are a total of 14 waterway sections that make up the system: eight on the São Paulo coast, three in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP) and three in the Paraíba Valley. Under the regulation of the Transport Agency of the State of São Paulo (Artesp), the crossings transport around 11 million passengers and 10 million vehicles per year.

On the coast, São Sebastião-Ilhabela, Santos-Vicente de Carvalho, Santos-Guarujá, Bertioga-Guarujá, Cananéia-Continente, Cananéia-Ilha Comprida, Cananéia-Ariri and Iguape-Juréia will be covered. In Greater São Paulo, the package includes Bororé-Grajaú, Taquacetuba-Bororé and João Basso-Taquacetuba. In Vale do Paraíba, the crossings at Porto Paraitinga, Porto Varginha and Porto Natividade da Serra will be changed.

The model will maintain the current free and fare exemption for ferries, information that was confirmed to the Political Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system) by the Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo, Natália Resende.

The project, approved in April by the Legislative Assembly of the State of SP (Alesp), foresees the complete renovation of the infrastructure, with the inclusion of 45 new electric ferries. In addition, it provides for the concession of the public intercity waterway transport service for vehicles and passengers.
