The discussion surrounding the new text of the Legal Framework for Combating Organized Crime has caused significant friction and disagreements in the political field of the Brazilian right. The project, which is based on the Antifaction PL, under the rapporteur of federal deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP-SP), generated multiple versions and interpretations, causing confusion. The analysis is by Clarissa Oliveira in CNN Behind the Scenes.
According to Clarissa, the debate on equating criminal organizations with terrorist organizations has been one of the most sensitive points, generating concerns about possible legal consequences.
“The right-wing camp wasted a significant opportunity to capitalize on the public security debate, which gained even more relevance after recent operations in Rio de Janeiro”, says the Politics analyst at CNN.
Voting intention polls had been showing favorable results for the right, but the confusion surrounding the project could compromise these advances.
The multiplicity of versions of the report presented by Derrite in a short period generated considerable wear and tear. “The current situation indicates that both the federal government, the initial author of the project, and the opposition could suffer political losses if a consensus is not reached”, says Clarissa.
The search now is for a text that unifies the different views and avoids legal controversies, allowing advances in the public security agenda. The absence of an agreement could result in losses for both sides of the political spectrum, compromising progress on important measures to combat organized crime.
