Does Slovakia have enough gas for the heating season? Minister Sakova spoke!

  • SPP has 17.8 TWh of gas in storage to meet needs.
  • For this year, gas supply includes 33% from Russia and 66% from alternative sources.
  • The Minister of Economy emphasized the need to strengthen gas transport routes.
  • The Slovak authority has capped gas prices at €30.7/MWh for the commodity.

The Slovak Gas Industry (SPP), as the largest gas supplier in Slovakia, has enough gas in its reservoirs to meet the needs of its customers. SPP has prepared 17.8 terawatt hours of gas for households and industrial enterprises, which is a third of the annual consumption. At the same time, the company has signed contracts with alternative suppliers. She said this at a press conference on Friday Minister of Economy Denisa Saková (Voice-SD).

Sakova reminded that Slovakia lost Russian gas supplies through Ukraine at the beginning of the year. This caused a complete blackout of Russian gas in January. For this year, according to Sakova SPP, it received 33% of gas from Russia and 66% from alternative sources from global suppliers such as Shell, BP or Exxon. However, according to the minister, Slovakia is counting on deliveries in the next period as well. SPP CEO Martin Húska added that SPP is not dependent on Russian gas and has diversification contracts for supplies and transport routes.

The director of the trade division, Michal Ľalík, emphasized that gas prices in Slovakia are higher than in Western Europe by five to six euros per megawatt hour (MWh). According to him, this is a consequence of the stoppage of natural gas supplies through Ukraine. In the past, according to him, the price difference was significantly smaller, namely only 50-60 cents. One of the reasons is the growing demand for gas in Ukraine due to damage to its own infrastructure, which is driving up prices in the region.

Saková reminded that Slovakia is most threatened by the European Commission’s decision to end Russian gas supplies. In this context, according to her, it is important that the capacities of some transport routes are further strengthened. She did not specify what the energy assistance for residents will be this year, given that the price procedures have not yet been completed and it is not clear what the costs of this energy assistance will be.

Nevertheless, according to Ľalík, gas prices for Slovak customers are not higher compared to the Czech Republic. According to him, the Office for the Regulation of Network Industries approved the SPP gas price for 2026 in the amount of 46 euros/MWh for the commodity and a total price of 68.1 euros per MWh. According to him, the Czech company Pražská plynárenská has a three-year fixed price of 44.7 euros/MWh and a total price of 67.9 euros/MWh. Slovakia has ceiling prices at the level of 30.7 euros per commodity and 51 euros/MWh in total.
