Large-scale attack on Kiev leaves one dead and 15 injured

During the attack, which caused damage in eight out of ten sectors of the Ukrainian capital, missiles and drones were used.

A large-scale attack with Russian missiles and drones against the Ukrainian capital this morning caused one death and at least 15 injuries, according to emergency services.

In a message on the Telegram messaging platform, Ukrainian emergency services announced a toll of “one dead and at least 15 injured in the Russian attack”, which caused damage in eight out of ten sectors of the capital.

“The Russians are hitting residential buildings. There are many tall buildings damaged in Kiev, in almost every neighborhood,” the head of the city’s military administration, Timour Tkatchenko, previously reported.

Journalists from the France-Presse news agency (AFP) heard loud explosions in the city center and observed that air defense systems were activated against drone and missile attacks.

When asking the population to go to shelters, following “a massive attack by the enemy on the capital”, the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, indicated that “air defense forces are operating in Kiev”.

Fires broke out in several neighborhoods after the attacks and emergency services were mobilized, he added.

“Parts of heating networks were damaged. In the Desniansky area, due to an emergency situation in the main heating pipeline, some buildings are temporarily unheated“, he concluded.

Oleksandr Markoushyn, mayor of Irpin, a town in the Kiev region, described on Facebook a “difficult night” with “multiple [drones] ‘Shahed’ and missiles flying over the city”.

Russia continues to advance in eastern Ukraine, especially in the Donetsk region, where most of the recent fighting has been concentrated.

At the same time, Moscow has been multiplying bombings against civil and energy infrastructures and the Ukrainian railway network for weeks, at a time of falling temperatures, with winter approaching.

On the Russian side, authorities reported today a Ukrainian attack on the oil port of Novorossiisk, on the Black Sea.

An oil refinery was hit by fire and several residential buildings were damaged by drone fragments, causing one injury, according to authorities.

“Following a massive attack on Novorossiisk, drone debris damaged one of the civilian ships in the port”, injuring three crew members, the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar region added.

Ukrainian drone attacks regularly cause damage to the oil and gas sectors and pipelines used to transport hydrocarbons, leading to an increase in fuel prices.

Also this morning, Russia announced that it had intercepted more than 200 Ukrainian drones.

“Overnight, air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 216 Ukrainian drones,” including 66 in the southern Krasnodar region and 59 over the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram.
