The former president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, was hit by eggs during the launch of his book in Madrid, on Thursday (13). According to him, the attack was carried out by his uncle.
Convicted of kissing player Jenni Hermoso without consent, the 48-year-old was presenting his new book “Matar a Rubiales” (Matar Rubiales) in the press room of Espacio Eventize in Madrid when a man in the audience began throwing eggs.
“It was my uncle, my blood uncle, who is a troublemaker and always has been,” Rubiales told Rádio Marca.
“He came in with some eggs and threw them at me, but I didn’t know what he had in his hands, and when I saw him come in suddenly, I thought he had a gun.”
In February, Spain’s High Court found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing striker Jenni Hermoso without her consent during celebrations for Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup victory in Sydney.
He was fined more than 10 thousand euros (R$ 61.5 thousand) and received a three-year suspension from FIFA (International Football Federation). The incident caused nationwide outrage over sexism in Spanish society and women’s football, boosting the #MeToo movement in the country.
