A detained a man for dangerous driving and assaulting police officers, who had to receive medical assistance, in the service area of highway 1 in Aveiras de Cima, municipality of Azambuja, after a chase that began on Complementary Itinerary 19.
In a statement released this Thursday, the PSP said that the vehicle in question was, on Monday, “circulate in a clearly irregular manner” close to Complementary Itinerary 19 (IC19) and that the driver disobeyed successive police stop orders, having started “a high-speed getaway”.
During the escape, “he carried out several dangerous maneuvers, causing collisions with road infrastructure and another vehicle, putting other road users at risk.”
PSP then chose to make a discreet pursuit and for gathering information about the vehiclehaving realized that it belonged to a car rental company and that it was equipped with a tracking device, which allowed the vehicle to be tracked “a greater distance”.
Two police officers were injured
In a first approach attempt, in a narrow urban area, the man “he violently started towards the police, with the intention of running over them, colliding with one of them”and continued with the escape.
Using GPS location, the vehicle was then intercepted in the service area of motorway 1 (A1), having the driver “actively resisted” to detention, attacking the police “with bites and pushes, which required the use of force strictly necessary to immobilize him”.

Vehicle was seized
O vehicle used was seized and is in the custody of the Traffic Division, while the suspect was present for the first judicial interrogation and was placed in preventive detention.
They were accused crimes against life (for attempted run over), crimes against qualified physical integrity, crime of driving without legal license, crime of dangerous driving, crimes against public property (damage to police vehicle), crime of resistance and coercion against an employee and crime of false statements before public authority (through attempted identity theft).
