Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced this Thursday that, after leaving the position of President of the Republic, he intends to be a guest professor at a university in California and take the opportunity to attend the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The head of state, who was speaking during a meeting of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, in a restaurant in Lisbon, where he decorated medal-winning athletes, said that in 2028 he will be “a free man”.
Revealing that he will be a teacher in California, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa declared his intention to experience the Olympic Games in another way.
“I will be a guest professor in California and therefore combines the useful with the pleasantwhich is to be there teaching, as a guest, in the year 2028 and, as you can imagine, it is a unique and privileged condition to, with more time, see more sports and follow even more of the triumphs of our athletes”, he declared.
In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considered that the 2028 Olympic Games are “a bet” by the PSD/CDS-PP Government and expressed the expectation that whoever succeeds him as head of the State, from March 9th next, will see “a huge leap in the Olympic presence” of Portugal.
The head of state said that he has spoken about this issue with the prime minister in weekly meetings and pointed out Luís Montenegro’s “enthusiasm” with “the commitment to the 2028 Olympic Games” as the “strongest” sign that “he wants to last at least four years”.
“A bet, we cannot say that it is the first nor that it is the only one, other governments have had it, to be fair. But the fact is that it is an important bet, at a time when the country has funds that it did not have in the past”, he added.
According to the President of the Republic, the executive intends to take advantage of these funds so that, “in infrastructure, in the conditions provided to athletes, in stimulating essential federations, in supporting clubs, there will be significant, very significant steps for 2028”.
