São Paulo released this Thursday (13) an update on the medical situation of midfielder Oscar, 34, hospitalized since Tuesday (11) in São Paulo. According to the bulletin, the investigation carried out at Einstein Hospital Israelita “confirmed the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope”.
The athlete felt unwell during preparatory exams for the 2026 season and had “an incident with cardiological changes”. According to the Morumbi club, he is “clinically well and stable” and this Friday (14) “will undergo an electrophysiological study”.
According to doctor Alfredo Salim Helito, from the Sírio-Libanês hospital, “vasovagal syndrome is a medical condition that stands out as the main responsible for episodes of fainting, also known as syncope”.
“These faints occur due to a sudden decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, triggered by stimulation of the vagus nerve, present in the back of the neck”, adds Helito.
Oscar even posted a message on social media saying that “everything will be fine, God willing.” The player had already presented cardiac changes in previous tests and is now considering leaving football.
His contract with São Paulo is scheduled to end in December 2027. The club’s football director, Carlos Belmonte, stated that he will respect the athlete’s wishes if his wish is to bring forward his retirement.
