The midfielder, a player from , remains hospitalized at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein after suffering vasovagal syncope, diagnosed after a series of tests carried out there. The club released an update on the athlete’s health status this Thursday afternoon (13), informing that the player was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday (11), after feeling unwell during tests prior to the 2026 season. According to São Paulo’s official statement, Oscar is in a stable condition and remains hospitalized in a cardiology unit. The club informed that the player will undergo an electrophysiological study this Friday (14). Vasovagal syncope, a condition that can cause sudden fainting due to a drop in blood pressure and heart rate, was identified after extensive medical investigation.

Oscar had a drop in blood pressure during the exams carried out at SuperCT and even fainted, being promptly attended to by the team’s doctors and taken to the hospital. Since then, the athlete has recovered and showed optimism on his social networks. Last Wednesday, the midfielder published a thank you to his fans and messages of support: “Thank you very much for the messages and prayers. Everything will be fine, God willing”, he wrote on Instagram.

Possibility of retirement

After the incident, which happened amid a series of exams and preparation for the 2026 season, the possibility of retirement was raised. In an interview with Estadão, São Paulo’s football director, Carlos Belmonte, stated that, at this moment, the board’s main concern is Oscar’s health. “The only thing we think is that Oscar is fine. Let’s wait. If he decides to stop, we support his decision,” said Belmonte.

Oscar, who has a contract with São Paulo until 2027, has not played since July 19, when he suffered an injury to his left calf. The expectation was that the player would return to the field in the classic against Corinthians, on the 20th, but the athlete’s health situation still needs to be closely monitored. The player, who has been one of the main names of the São Paulo team, played 21 matches in 2025, scoring two goals. Oscar’s future in football depends on his recovery and a personal decision about continuing his career.

Carlos Belmonte highlighted that, regardless of Oscar’s choice, São Paulo will be by the player’s side. “If Oscar is not well, or if he decides not to play anymore, we will support his decision. He is a boy who deserves all our respect, he is very dedicated. We will wait and, if he decides to stop, we will negotiate his departure with all due respect”, said the director.

While Oscar’s future in football remains uncertain, São Paulo remains focused on supporting the athlete at this delicate moment, awaiting the evolution of his clinical condition for future decisions.
