Police action executes warrants, targets suspects linked to organized crime and expands investigation that has already lasted 11 months
This Friday morning (14), the Civil and Military Police of Rio de Janeiro carried out a new stage of Operation Containment, an action aimed at containing the advance of the (CV). The offensive in São João de Meriti, in , takes place two weeks after the phase of the operation that ended with 121 deaths in the Penha and Alemão complexes, the deadliest ever recorded in the country. In this new phase, agents from the Narcotics Repression Police Station (DRE-CAP), the Core (Special Resources Coordination) and the (Special Police Operations Battalion) operate in the Eden Basin, Castelinho and nearby areas. According to police, at least four suspects have been arrested so far. Among the targets of the precautionary measures is the brother of councilor Marcos Aquino (Republicans), from São João de Meriti, who is being investigated for alleged links with the CV nucleus that operates in the region. The congressman’s brother was not located, but the councilor himself appeared at the scene of the operation. During the approach, the agents found a gun on him that, according to the corporation, belonged to another person. For this reason, Aquino was taken to the police station.
In addition to complying with court orders, the operation seeks to prevent the faction’s territorial advance, arrest identified members, collect new evidence and locate assets used for money laundering. The police are also trying to seize weapons, drugs and remove barricades installed by organized crime, which restrict the movement of residents.
Operation Containment began on October 28, when the major police action in the Penha and Alemão complexes ended with 121 deaths — including four police officers. The episode marked the most lethal operation in Brazilian history. The Civil Police states that the new phase is a continuation of investigations that target the structure and expansion of Comando Vermelho in the capital and Baixada Fluminense.
