Debris from Ukrainian drones hit the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant in southwestern Russia on Thursday, briefly shutting down its operation, the director of Russia’s nuclear power agency Rosatom said today.

“About eight drones were directed, there is no doubt about it, towards the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant,” Alexei Likachev told a press conference. The drones were shot down, he said, but “some debris shrapnel and damaged the general distribution mechanism,” he added.

“For precautionary reasons, three units of the station (…) were disconnected from the grid and their capacity was reduced below 50%,” he explained, adding that the restoration work then allowed production to quickly resume at the station at full capacity.

Novovoronezh station is located approximately 500 kilometers from Moscow.
