e concluded the details of an agreement for the construction of nuclear-powered submarines, the South Korean president announced this Friday (14).. “One of the biggest variables for our economy and our security — bilateral negotiations on trade, tariffs and security — has been concluded,” Lee announced to reporters.
He also explained that the two countries decided to “move forward with the construction of nuclear-powered submarines.” South Korea has obtained “the necessary support (from the United States) to expand its authority over uranium enrichment and the reprocessing of spent fuel,” he added.
A joint note states that “the countries committed to continuing their collaboration with a working group on shipbuilding to increase the number of combat-ready American commercial and military ships.”
The document specifies that gave “its consent” to Seoul to build the submarines, but the manufacturing location is still unclear.
American nuclear submarine technology is considered one of the best kept military secrets on the planet. The note stipulates that Seoul will spend $25 billion on purchasing American military equipment by 2030 and provide full support to American forces in South Korea for $33 billion.
