Tariffs: Vieira expects response from the US this Friday or next week

Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira stated that the United States government should offer a response to the Brazilian proposal for tariffs on Friday (14) or next week.

Vieira met with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in Washington this Thursday (13) to discuss the tariff imposed on Brazilian products in August.

“The Secretary of State said that he is examining it with all attention and all the time, that he wants to quickly resolve bilateral issues with Brazil and that the answer will come very soon — tomorrow or next week”, the Brazilian chancellor told journalists, when asked about the occurrence of the Brazilian proposal.

“The important thing is to say that it is a demonstration of the interest of the American government, of the Secretary of State, in resolving all the issues still pending in the relationship with Brazil,” said Vieira.

EHe added that this Thursday’s meeting is “a sign” of the US desire to “turn this page around and get closer to Brazil”.

Shortly afterwards, he said that at the meeting a reciprocity framework for the commercial relationship between the two countries was discussed.

Lula-Trump Chemistry

The decision to continue talks on tariffs came from the presidents, after a bilateral meeting in Malaysia at the end of October.

Before, at the beginning of the same month, they both had a “friendly” phone call, the first between the two.

The doors to discussions on the topic actually opened in September, after a quick meeting between Lula and Trump behind the scenes of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, when, according to the American, they had “excellent chemistry”.
