The general secretary of the PP, Miguel Tellado, has closed ranks with the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, after her statements on immigration and, in parallel, has charged against the state attorney general, whom he accuses of having “filled his toga with the mud of Pedro Sánchez’s corruption.” In a press conference in Alcorcón, Tellado has supported the regional leader, who on Thursday in the plenary session of the Assembly addressed Vox with a criticism of its immigration policies: “Someone will have to clean their houses, and someone will have to put the bricks in the houses where the rest of us will later live,” Ayuso launched. Asked about these words, the general secretary of the PP has defended that the president explained “perfectly what she wanted to say”, and has insisted that in Spain “there are a million jobs that are not covered” and that, therefore, “manpower is needed”.
“What we defend is that all those immigrants who want to come to develop a life project, to contribute, to work and add to our economy, have the doors open,” added Tellado, who has highlighted his party’s position by evoking the immigration plan that Alberto Núñez Feijóo presented in October: “We are not in maximalist positions, neither the open bar policy on illegal immigration that the PSOE defends, nor the Vox policy of immigrants outside.”
The PP plan proposes, among other measures, the creation of a plan that is conditional on labor incorporation in sectors with a lack of “labor” and the origin of countries with a “close culture”, such as Latin America. With this proposal, the PP not only seeks to tighten the arrival requirements, but also the regularizations and access of immigrants to public aid and Spanish nationality. Feijóo proposed in his presentation to “raise the level of cultural and linguistic demand” to obtain nationality with the argument that it “is not given, it is deserved.”
This approach also incorporates tougher measures against crime, such as automatic expulsion in cases of convictions for especially serious crimes (homicide, murder, sexual assault, terrorism, trafficking or smuggling) or for intentional recidivism in minor crimes. Tellado has stressed that the party is “perfectly receptive” to “orderly and regular legal immigration.” “Whoever wants to come to our country, because life is good here and there are job opportunities here, their doors are open. Those who want to come to commit crimes have to leave Spain,” he concluded.
About the State Attorney General
Tellado has accused the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of trying to influence the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the case of the State Attorney General in an interview with EL PAÍS, something that the popular interprets as an attempt to “show the way for the judges” and “attack the separation of powers.”
The general secretary of the popular party has also presented his conclusions on the case, despite criticizing Sánchez for this. “It is evident that if the State Attorney General has committed a crime, he has done so because someone has asked him to,” he said. “He who has nothing to hide, deletes nothing, for a state attorney general to delete his WhatsApp and delete his email is called obstruction of justice,” he argued. Tellado joins the prosecution’s position, which sees the deletion of the devices as an indication of guilt. Álvaro García Ortiz, on the other hand, justified in his statement that he deletes all messages and emails from his phone and computer “systematically” because a leak of his communications could “put many people in this country in danger.”
The representative of the PP has stated that “the State Attorney General has stained his robe with mud,” before referring to a statement by Judge Cándido Conde Pumpido, who was appointed head of the Attorney General’s Office 19 years ago by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. “He literally said that the prosecutors’ robes had to be stained with the dust of the road,” began Tellado, who pointed out that he stated this “to justify the Prosecutor’s Office putting itself at the service of the Government.” He has used this to argue that García Ortiz “has not stained his toga with the dust of the road, but rather has filled his toga with the mud of the corruption of Pedro Sánchez’s government.”
