In the dispute over the ban on the import of Russian gas, Hungary will file a lawsuit against the European Union, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on Friday. TASR informs about it based on the report of the APA agency.

“We do not accept this obviously illegal solution, which is contrary to European values,” Orbán said. “We will turn to the Court of Justice of the EU,” he added in an interview for state radio. Despite the Russian war against Ukraine, which has been going on for almost four years, Hungary is one of Moscow’s last remaining allies in the EU and remains heavily dependent on energy imports from Russiathe APA agency noted.

In the past, Budapest has used its veto power in the 27-nation bloc to gain exemptions from EU sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector. In October, the EU member states agreed to gradually end the import of natural gas from Russia by the end of 2027. According to diplomatic sources, this step was supported by all countries with the exception of Hungary and Slovakia, the APA agency reported.
