A serious accident that took place today in the center of the Swedish capital claimed several lives and injured people. A double-decker bus crashed into a bus stop near the Royal Institute of Technology. The police have already confirmed the arrest of the driver and launched an investigation into the death, categorically ruling out that it was an act of terrorism.
The incident took place in the afternoon in a busy part of Stockholm. For reasons still unclear, the bus crashed into a shelter at a public transport stop. Rescue services quickly responded to the report of the accident, while police patrols, firefighters and several ambulances intervened on the scene.
A spokesman for the local emergency services said they had recorded a total of six victims, but did not specify the exact ratio between the dead and injured. The important fact is that there were no passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Apprehension of the driver and exclusion of the attack
Swedish police confirmed that the bus driver was immediately arrested. However, according to a police spokesman, this step is standard procedure. An investigation was opened on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.
“We are investigating the case as an involuntary manslaughter. The bus driver has been arrested, but this is standard procedure in such incidents,” a police spokesman said. At the same time, the police added that they have no information that would indicate that this was a deliberate attack. Authorities have not yet released details about the victims’ ages, genders or identities.
Prime Minister’s reaction
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also reacted to the tragic event. In a statement on social media, X expressed regret over the accident.
“We do not yet know the cause of this accident, but my thoughts are now primarily with those affected and their families,” Prime Minister Kristersson wrote.
