The total number of affected residences was reduced from 23 to 11, with 10 properties completely closed and one partially closed. On Thursday morning, 12 residences were completely closed and 11 were partially closed. After a new inspection, the number was adjusted. The majority of homeless families chose to take shelter in relatives’ homes, while one person was referred to the Social Emergency Care Coordination (CPAS).
The explosion occurred in a house located near Avenida Salim Farah Maluf, near Avenida Celso Garcia, at around 7:50 pm on Thursday. The Fire Department confirmed that one person died and 10 others were injured due to the incident. The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported that the residence was used as a clandestine warehouse for fireworks, which would have caused the explosion.
The impact of the explosion was great, hitting neighboring properties, knocking down metal structures and causing damage to vehicles parked in the area. During the aftermath, the Fire Department called in the Military Police’s GATE (Special Tactical Actions Group) Bomb Squad, which located a charred body among the rubble. The victim was identified as a man suspected of illegally storing the fireworks.
Images circulated on social media showed a large column of smoke and an area on fire, with residents recording the moment of the explosion. In videos taken by surveillance cameras, it is possible to see bursts of fireworks crossing Avenida Salim Farah Maluf, and residents of nearby buildings reported “flashes” and an extremely loud noise, with some stating that “everything shook” due to the force of the impact.
Due to the fire and the intensity of the explosion, authorities were unable to immediately determine the exact location of the origin of the flames. Initially, the Military Police had considered the possibility that the explosion had been caused by a balloon that fell or by damage to electrical network transformers.
The São Paulo Civil Police opened an investigation to investigate the circumstances of the incident, registering the case as “explosion, environmental crime and bodily injury” in the 30th Police District (DP) of Tatuapé. The site inspection was requested and the necroscopic examination will be carried out by the Medical-Legal Institute (IML). The SSP highlighted the seriousness of the situation, highlighting that the illegal storage of explosive materials represents a serious risk to the safety and integrity of the population. The police are taking all necessary measures to clarify the facts and hold those involved accountable.
