Brazilian entities sent this Friday (14) a statement to the Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights of the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights), warning of the “serious risk of institutional dismantling of the National System (Sisnama)” in the country.
The demonstration is supported by the Society, Population and Nature Institute (ISPN), Washington Brazil Office, Climate Observatory and Conectas Human Rights.
According to the entities, the law approved by the l, known as PL da Devastação, “contradicts the principles of precaution, prevention and environmental non-regression, pillars of international and inter-American environmental and human rights”.
The organizations also say that the project, which has not yet been analyzed by Congress, is “a direct threat to global climate stability, environmental protection, life and human security.”
They add that “the Brazilian State’s failure to protect ecosystems, by facilitating their destruction through legal means, may constitute a violation of obligations towards the entire international community and, fundamentally, towards present and future generations”.
The group asks the Rapporteur to issue a public recommendation for the Brazilian State to take measures to reestablish environmental licensing mechanisms and consultations with traditional peoples, in addition to strengthening public oversight bodies and avoiding the approval of new measures of similar content.
