The Ministry of Health announced, this Friday (14), the transfer of R$28 million to strengthen the mother and child network in Ceará, especially in Fortaleza.
The investment takes place one day after the fire that hit the maternity ward at Hospital Geral Dr. César Cals (HGCC), the oldest and third largest unit in the state.
As part of the emergency response, the federal government also confirmed the opening of 285 new obstetric and neonatal beds in the capital, to ensure continuity of care while the hospital undergoes restructuring.
The announcement was made after a meeting between the department’s Secretary of Specialized Health Care, Mozart Sales, Governor Elmano de Freitas and Mayor Evandro Leitão, in addition to the state and municipal Health Secretaries.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning (13), around 10 am, and was controlled at 11:15 am by the Fire Department. According to the Ceará Health Department, the fire reached the unit’s energy substation. For safety reasons, the power and gas supply was interrupted during the operation.
There were no injuries, and no assistance areas were hit. However, babies had to be removed from incubators and beds by staff, in an emergency action. They were transferred to other health units.
According to the State Governor, Elmano de Freitas, the patients were transferred to another hospital, as a precautionary measure. ” I have determined that the causes of the fire be rigorously investigated. ” The governor wrote.
