A survey released this Friday (14) by Nexus in partnership with shows that football remains firm as the country’s main sporting passion. According to the survey, seven in ten Brazilians usually watch matches, and almost half of the population watches at least one game per week.

Even among those who say they don’t follow championships, the bond with a club remains strong: 78% of those interviewed said they support a national team. Among the declared fans, the leads with 26% of preferences, followed by (19%), (9%), (7%) and Vasco da Gama (5%).

Next come Internacional and Cruzeiro, with 4% each; Atlético Mineiro, Grêmio and Santos, with 3%; and Botafogo, Bahia and Fluminense, with 2%. The other clubs make up the remaining 11% of the national fan base. The study also indicates changes in the profile of fans: the majority of fans are still made up of men — 87% compared to 69% women — and young people aged 16 to 24 stand out as the most engaged group.

For the president of the CBF, Samir Xaud, the data reinforces the strength of sport in the country. “In general, football continues to be the national passion. The world today offers different ways, whether the most traditional or modern technology, to follow, be informed, and experience this sport. We are seeking to improve experiences, attract fans to go to the field and follow the spectacle”, he stated.
