The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) signed this Saturday (15) a protocol of intentions with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) to expand the supply of renewable energy and “economic opportunities” to remote communities in the region. The partnership will last for five years and was formalized on the sixth day of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change ().

This protocol, according to the MME, will support the ministry’s efforts to eliminate so-called energy poverty in the Amazon states, where almost 1 million Brazilians still live without access to electricity and 2 million are not connected to the national energy grid, according to estimates by the ministry.

Another front, with this initiative, is the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels, in convergence with the guidelines of the Energias da Amazônia program, focused on decarbonization.

Isolated systems – those in which electrical energy distribution is not connected to the National Interconnected System (SNI) – are mostly concentrated in the North Region.

To guarantee the supply of electrical energy, each isolated system has a plant, with diesel generation predominating.

“The protocol of intentions signed today will define joint actions in financing, technical assistance and knowledge exchange to expand access to renewable energy and productive use projects in the Amazon region”, says the MME statement.
