Tomatoes are botanically a fruit, but in the kitchen they are most often treated as a vegetable, which is why most people call them a vegetable. It is one of the healthiest products that we can provide to the bodycontains a lot of vitamins and minerals that support the functioning of various systems.
Tomatoes contain the most lycopene – it is a strong antioxidantwhich has a positive effect on eye and heart health. It helps regulate blood sugar levels and protects against free radicals. However, by storing tomatoes in an inappropriate place, we can significantly reduce the lycopene content in the vegetable.
Tomatoes are most popular in summer, but they also have their supporters in autumn and winter. We have many varieties to choose from, so you can adjust the taste of the vegetable to the dishes and your own taste. Their popularity is also influenced by the fact that they exist quite easy to grow in our conditions. Tomatoes can be processed, for example, into ketchup or pizza sauce. They are perfect for marinating. However, when it comes to storing fresh vegetables, many of us make mistakes.
Many people keep tomatoes in the refrigerator, but this is not advisable. Low temperatures adversely affect lycopenewhich is the greatest advantage of these vegetables – in such conditions they lose this compound and, consequently, many ingredients that support the body’s health. Moreover, storing them in the refrigerator stops their ripening and changes the structure of the flesh.
In addition tomatoes should not be stored in a warm, sunny place, e.g. in a fruit bowl. If kept in this way, they will lose their taste and deteriorate much faster, and they react particularly badly to the company of bananas, apples and pears.
