Research reveals that 97% of people do not distinguish AI music from that created by humans

Research carried out by Ipsos, at the request of the streaming musical Deezer, pointed out that 97% of people cannot differentiate (Artificial Intelligence) from those made by humans. The first global study focused on these perceptions and behaviors was carried out with nine thousand people in eight countries. In addition to Brazil, data was collected in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Germany and Japan.

All invited participants listened to three tracks and had to indicate whether or not they were entirely generated by – 97% of respondents got it wrong. The majority (71%) were surprised by the result, and more than half (52%) felt uncomfortable because they could not differentiate.

With regard to Brazilian respondents, 97% were also unable to distinguish songs made by AI from those created by humans. However, they demonstrated great enthusiasm and confidence towards Artificial Intelligence in music, aligning with their tradition of embracing innovation. The users interviewed also stated that they actively use AI tools (42%) in their daily lives, alThey believe (59%) that technology will play an important role in creating music in the future.

On the other hand, 60% of participants also expressed concern about the possibility that the use of AI could cause a loss of creativity in music production.

Need for transparency for users

  • 80% agree that 100% AI-generated music should be clearly identifiable to listeners;
  • 73% would like to know if a service streaming of music is recommending 100% AI-generated music;
  • 52% believe that 100% AI-generated songs should not be included in music charts alongside those created by humans;
  • Only 11% believe that 100% AI-generated music should be treated the same on music charts;
  • 58% believe that their platform streaming of music does not recommend 100% AI-generated songs, while 25% are uncertain.

Recognition and appreciation of artists

  • 65% say it should not be allowed to use copyrighted material to train AI models used to create music;
  • 70% believe that 100% AI-generated music threatens the remuneration of current and future musicians/artists/composers;
  • 73% think it is unethical for AI companies to use copyrighted material to generate new music without the express approval of the original artist;
  • 69% believe that payments for 100% AI-generated music should be lower than those for human-created songs.
