The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, harshly criticized Lula, saying that he is incapable of acting against organized crime. He also said that the PT governed the country for years, but did not bring anything new.

In fact, from 2003 until today, the PT governed the country for practically 16 years, and crime has only worsened. During this period, public security was treated as a secondary issue, always with that mistaken view of the left that it was enough to resolve the social issue and crime would decrease.

Since then, there has been no program to intensify border control, permanent occupation of areas dominated by drug trafficking, including with military support; penal toughening bills (exception to the latter due to popular pressure) and significant construction of prisons. On the contrary, public security was never treated as a central issue in the PT administration.

Evidently, all these gaps will be exploited by the right-wing candidate. Tarcísio took the lead in playing his public security secretary, Guilherme Derrite, in the rapporteurship of PL Antifaction. Now, Lula is hit with the main Achilles heel of the PT administration. It was not a speech from a governor, but clearly from someone with aspirations to be president.
