The situation occurred at around 11 am. Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said that the radar images indicate that the probability of it being a tornado It’s very big.

In a press conference, the district commander of relief operations in Faro said that the phenomenon caused six victims in the Campsiteamong which, um dead, two seriously injured and three slightly injured.

Num hotel of Albufeira, also affected by the phenomenon, which occurred at the end of the morning, there is a record of 23 slightly injuredfour of which were transported to Faro Hospital, he added.

According to Carlos Raposa, from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), among the 29 injured there are six children, between two months and seven years old, all classified as slightly injured, and 23 adults, between 24 and 70 years old.

Chaos also in the North

The storm and intense rain this morning caused flooding, fallen trees and road closures in Santa Maria da Feira.

Without providing specific numbers of occurrences, Vítor Marques told Lusa that in Santa Maria da Feira “the bad weather made people strange throughout the municipality” and that “property damage will be recorded in the future”.

“There are no victims or injuries, but the situation was complicated during the night with the water rising to the level of houses, falling trees and flooding. The worst period was between 2 am and 4 am due to a lot of rain and hail”, said the mayor.

“An embankment gave way on a road in Sampaio de Oleiros and the road is closed. In the riverside areas the water rose, but it is now under control. In the center of Santa Maria da Feira, in downtown Rossio next to the restaurants, it was also difficult. No preventive measure could contain this situation. We recorded parts of the facade falling, but most of them in vacant houses, facades falling”, said the mayor.

Elderly woman was trapped at home

Em Vila do Conde the situation was also critical. 16 rooms stayed flooded in the parish of Modivas, where a elderly woman was trapped at homedue to the heavy rains that occurred during the morning-

Many of the houses had rooms completely submerged, and several residents lost essential goods, especially an elderly couple and a man who lives alone.

“Some of these families have really lost a lot, but we are providing everything we can to guarantee them the greatest possible comfort at this time”, highlighted the Mayor, Vítor Costa.

According to the mayor, despite the damage, “it was not necessary to relocate, since all residents have enough family support to spend the next few days”.

Vítor Costa appeared somewhat apprehensive about the possibility of a new peak of heavy rain, in the late afternoon and early morning, which will require “keeping all resources on the ground, in prevention, for what may happen in the next few hours”.

The mayor of Vila do Conde regretted that these phenomena expose some structural weaknesses of the country, which exceed the capacity of municipalities.

“No infrastructure is prepared for these extreme phenomena, which are increasingly frequent. We have to rethink the territory and prevention measures, and planning issues have to be taken very seriously. The solution is not easy, but we have to act collectively”, he warned.

In addition to this more critical situation in the parish of Modivas, the mayor of Vila do Conde reported “numerous incidents throughout the municipality, since Friday night, which led to the intervention of firefighters and municipal teams”.
