The United States and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, called on the UN Security Council on Friday to quickly adopt a resolution that would approve US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. TASR informs according to the report of the AFP agency.
- The Gaza peace plan presented by the United States is seeking approval.
- Several Arab and Muslim countries supported the UN resolution.
- Russia presented an alternative proposal against the peace council.
- The United States emphasizes the need for a deal to stabilize Gaza.
- The questions focus on the details of the planned international mandate.
“The United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan and Turkey express their joint support for the Security Council resolution, which is currently under discussion,” the countries said in a joint statement. They added that they are striving for the rapid adoption of this measure.
Russia’s alternative proposal
Meanwhile, Russia presented an alternative draft of the text on Gaza, AFP reminds.
Last week, the US officially began negotiations within the 15-member UN Security Council on a text that would follow up on a ceasefire agreement in the two-year war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and backed Trump’s plan.
The draft resolution, seen by AFP on Thursday, “welcomes the establishment of a peace council”, a transitional governing body for Gaza – which Trump would theoretically chair – with a mandate until the end of 2027. It would also authorize member states to create an “interim International Stabilization Force (ISF)” to work with Israel and Egypt and newly trained Palestinian police to help secure border areas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.
Controversies around the Peace Council
Unlike previous proposals, the latest text also mentions a possible future Palestinian state, writes AFP.
Friday’s joint statement comes as Russia sent a competing draft resolution to council members that, according to the text, does not authorize the creation of a peace council or the immediate deployment of international forces in Gaza.
The Russian version welcomes “the initiative that led to the ceasefire”, but does not mention Trump. At the same time, he calls on the UN Secretary General to “identify the possibilities of implementing the provisions” of the peace plan and to urgently submit a report that will also deal with the possibilities of deploying international stabilization forces in the Gaza Strip.
American design under scrutiny
The United States described the current cease-fire in Gaza as “fragile” and warned on Thursday of the risks of not accepting its proposal.
Although the members of the Security Council so far seemed to support the principles of the peace plan, diplomatic sources noted that there are several questions regarding the American text, especially regarding the absence of a monitoring mechanism by the UN Security Council, the role of the Palestinian Authority and the details of the ISF’s mandate, the French agency concludes.
