The president of ,, announced this Saturday (15) the start of a “reform” of public companies in the Ukrainian energy sector, including the nuclear operator Energoatom, which has been at the center of a wide-ranging corruption scandal in recent days. On Monday (10), the National Anti-Corruption Office of Ukraine (NABU) announced that it had discovered a “criminal system” responsible for the embezzlement of 100 million dollars (more than 500 million reais) in this sector, which led to the dismissal of the Ministers of Justice and Energy.

“We are starting the reform of the main public companies in the energy sector”, declared the Ukrainian president in a statement released on social media. According to the statement, a new supervisory board should be in place “within a week” at Energoatom, the public nuclear operator at the center of the scandal.

In addition to Energoatom, other public energy companies are also implicated, such as the country’s hydroelectric operator and national gas extraction and transport operators. According to Zelensky, a “complete audit” of the financial activities of these companies will be carried out, as well as the renewal of their directors and the “State representatives” who are part of their management bodies.

“Any scheme discovered at these companies must receive a swift and fair response,” he added. The Ukrainian president assured in his statement that he ordered government officials to maintain “constant and constructive communication with the forces of order and anti-corruption bodies”. In addition to the legal problems, the Ukrainian energy sector has been hit hard in recent days by a campaign of Russian missile and drone attacks, which has left much of Ukraine in darkness.
