These are provisional data but indicate that fewer people died on Portuguese roads this year compared to the same period in 2024, however, accidents and serious and minor injuries increased.
The more than 125,000 road accidents recorded this year caused 379 deaths, according to data from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), in connection with the world day in memory of road victims, which takes place this Sunday.
Provisional data shows that this year fewer people died on Portuguese roads compared to the same period in 2024, but accidents, serious and minor injuries increased.
According to ANSR, between January 1st and November 13th, there were 125,621 road accidents, 3,730 more than in the same period of the previous year (121,891), and 379 people died, 41 fewer than last year (420).
The accidents caused this year 2,451 serious injuries, 40 more than in the same period in 2024, and 39,316 minor injuries, 686 more.
Data by district puts Lisbon ahead
This year, odThe district where the most people died in road accidents was Lisbon (43), next was Porto (41) and in third place was Setúbal (31).
In turn, the districts with the fewest deaths are Guarda (six), Évora (nine) and Vila Real (11).
Lisbon (21,543), Porto (20,644) and Aveiro (9,545) were the districts with greater number of disastersaccording to provisional data from ANSR.
Already Portalegre (1,270), Bragança (1,278) and Guarda (1,524) recorded the lowest number of accidents on the roads.
Ceremony in Évora
To mark the world day in memory of road victims, the League of Associations for Road Citizenship, Safe and Sustainable Mobility and the Association for the Promotion of a Road Safety Culture GARE organize a ceremony in Évora.
According to Estrada Viva, statistics indicate that road accidents continue to be the main cause of death for children and young people between the ages of five and 29.
“On this World Day of Remembrance for Road Victims, we remember in particular the million young people around the world who lose their lives on the road. A million young people with dreams and talents to fulfill, who will never reach their full potential”, says the Estrada Viva statement.
According to the note, the date falls within the Global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, promoted by the United Nations, being the international motto of the “Remember, Support, Act” campaign.
According to Estrada Viva, this date, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of November each year, is intended to honor the memory of the road victims and the work of the emergency services.
