Wilmer Chavarría Barré, known as ‘Pipo’ and leader of the Los Lobos cartel, was arrested in Málaga, Spain, in a joint operation by Spanish and Ecuadorian authorities.
The leader of the Los Lobos cartel and one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Latin America, Wilmer Chavarría Barré, known as “Pipo”, was arrested in Spain, the President and the Minister of the Interior of Ecuador announced.
“Today we captured ‘Pipo’ Chavarría, the most wanted criminal in the region and top leader of Los Lobos”, announced, on the social network X, the President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa.
In publications on the same platform, the Ecuadorian Minister of the Interior, John Reimbergand the commander of the National Police of Ecuador, Pablo Maldonadostated that the arrest took place in Málagain southern Spain, as a result of a “articulated work” between the authorities of the two countries.
In announcing the arrest, Daniel Noboa referred to “Stocking cap” as “the criminal who simulated your mplaceschanged his identity and hid in Europe while ordering assassinations in Ecuador, controlling illegal mining operations and coordinating drug routes alongside the cartel [mexicano] Jalisco New Generation“.
According to the Spanish news agency o Los Lobos posters became the most powerful criminal group in Ecuador by leading the war between criminal organizations that, since 2020, has caused an unprecedented wave of violence in the South American country.
The group led by “Pipo” was, according to the authorities, the one that had more success in emancipating itself from the Los Choneros carteldue to an alliance with the cartel Jalisco New Generationto send cocaine, coming mainly from Colombia, to Mexico.
The Los Lobos cartel also reached an agreement with dissident groups from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to exploitation of illegal mines in border areas of the Amazon.
