When a team of archaeologists examined soil from an ancient sewer near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, they came across a small piece of clay among some other artifacts. The fragment, which was only three centimeters long, did not initially appear particularly interesting to the uninformed eye; it was thought to be a piece of decoration. However, freed from dirt, it quickly turned out to be part of a cuneiform document – and the tiny artifact transformed from a seemingly inconspicuous find into a full-blown sensation.
